Obverse description Crowned Portuguese royal arms within an ornate shield, centrally displaying the five quinas (escutcheons) of Portugal arranged in a cross pattern, surrounded by the castle bordure of Castile. The crowned shield is set in the coin's field with no effigy of the king. The encircling legend reads JOANNES.VI.D.G.PORT.BRASIL.ET.ALG.REX, identifying João VI as King of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarves. The legend is rendered in raised Latin characters distributed evenly around the periphery.
