Obverse description Crowned Portuguese royal shield of arms at center, displaying the five escutcheons arranged in a cross with roundels, surrounded by the castles of the bordure. The royal crown appears above the shield in high relief. The circular Latin legend IOANNES V D G RE PORTVG runs along the periphery, identifying King João V by name and divine right. The overall design is characteristic of the milled Portuguese silver coinage of the early eighteenth century.
