The "vintem" denomination — worth 20 réis — was a workhorse of Portuguese daily commerce, and the 3-vintem piece (60 réis) filled a specific gap in small silver transactions during João's prolonged regency. His regency itself stretched unusually long because his mother, Queen Maria I, had been declared mentally incapacitated in 1799, leaving João to govern without the title of king until her death in 1816.
