Reverse description The reverse features the Cross of the Order of Christ prominently displayed at center, rendered in the distinctive Portuguese style with a cross pattée outlined by a broader cross, adorned with four quatrefoil ornaments placed between the arms of the cross. The circular Latin motto IN HOC SIGNO VINCES ('In this sign you shall conquer') surrounds the central device, separated by small star or cross stops. A milled border frames the entire composition, consistent with the obverse treatment.

Additional information

The "vintem" denomination — worth 20 réis — was a workhorse of Portuguese daily commerce, and the 3-vintem piece (60 réis) filled a specific gap in small silver transactions during João's prolonged regency. His regency itself stretched unusually long because his mother, Queen Maria I, had been declared mentally incapacitated in 1799, leaving João to govern without the title of king until her death in 1816. Coins struck across that fourteen-year window can show subtle die differences worth examining against the Gomes reference.
