Beschrijving voorzijde Cast silver coin centered on a raised square boss framing the characteristic square central perforation. Four large Chinese characters arranged in cruciform order around the central hole read 紹治通寶 (Thiệu Trị Thông Bảo), meaning 'Circulating Treasure of the Thiệu Trị reign,' rendered in bold relief with well-defined strokes. The flat field between the characters and the raised rim is unadorned, giving the design a restrained, classical appearance typical of Nguyễn dynasty cast coinage.

Aanvullende informatie

Thiệu Trị ruled for just six years before dying in 1847, and his coinage reflects a reign preoccupied with French naval pressure along the coast and internal consolidation after his father Minh Mạng's aggressive centralization. The 3 tiền denomination sat in an awkward practical middle — too heavy for everyday transactions, not substantial enough for large commercial exchange — which partly explains why surviving examples show limited wear.
