| Obverse description | Central square hole surrounded by a raised square rim, with four large Chinese characters arranged in the four cardinal positions reading 嗣德通寶 (Tự Đức Thông Bảo), denoting the reign title and the declaration of current currency. The characters are rendered in a bold, regular script style typical of Vietnamese imperial cast coinage, with the reign title 嗣德 (Tự Đức) occupying the top and bottom positions and 通寶 (Thông Bảo) flanking left and right. The flat field shows a lightly textured surface consistent with the cast production method, and the coin is bounded by a plain raised rim. |
