| 表面の説明 | Four large Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) arranged in cruciform order around a central sunburst motif radiating outward from the coin's centre. Reading clockwise from the top, the characters 明 (Minh), 通 (Thông), 寶 (Bảo), and 命 (Mạng) occupy the four cardinal positions within the plain field. A border of fine radial lines encircles the entire design just inside the coin's raised rim, giving the piece a distinctive decorative framework typical of Nguyễn Dynasty cast silver coinage. |

Minh Mạng, the second Nguyễn emperor, oversaw a dramatic expansion of the imperial coinage system — centralizing mint operations and standardizing silver denominations in a way his predecessor Gia Long had never fully achieved. The 3 tiền denomination occupied an awkward middle position in daily commerce, too valuable for ordinary market transactions but below the threshold of the larger lạng-based silver pieces used in official payments and tribute.
Minh Mạng died in January 1841 after a reign marked by administrative consolidation and fierce suppression of both Christian missionaries and regional rebellions, particularly in the south.
