Obverse description Four large Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) arranged in cruciform order around a central sunburst motif radiating outward from the coin's centre. Reading clockwise from the top, the characters 明 (Minh), 通 (Thông), 寶 (Bảo), and 命 (Mạng) occupy the four cardinal positions within the plain field. A border of fine radial lines encircles the entire design just inside the coin's raised rim, giving the piece a distinctive decorative framework typical of Nguyễn Dynasty cast silver coinage.

Reverse description A sinuous imperial dragon rendered in high relief dominates the entire reverse field, its scaled, pearl-dotted body coiling dynamically across the coin's surface. The five-clawed dragon is depicted in the classic Nguyễn court style, with a horned, bearded head turned to face the viewer, flames and cloud scrolls issuing from its limbs, and its tail curling toward the lower right. Fine foliate and floral elements fill the remaining field, while the same radial border of incuse lines seen on the obverse frames the composition just within the coin's raised rim. The casting quality is bold and assured, characteristic of the Imperial Mint at Huế during the reign of Emperor Minh Mạng.
