Obverse description Central field depicts a three-quarter armored bust of Duke Julius of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel facing slightly right, wearing elaborate plate armor and a plumed helmet, with the date 1578 inscribed in the inner field. The bust is surrounded by a decorative wreath-like inner border populated with foliate and ornamental motifs, within which heraldic animals and decorative elements appear in multiple concentric rings. An outer circular legend in German reads in Gothic-influenced lettering, identifying the duke by name and title. The overall design is characteristic of large German Renaissance Löser multiples, executed in high relief with rich decorative detail typical of the Brunswick mint's work of this period.
