Francis, Duke of Pomerania-Stettin, died in November 1620, and this multiple thaler was struck as a memorial issue — a practice well-established among German princes of the period as both dynastic commemoration and political statement. His death carried unusual dynastic weight: Francis was the last male of the Pomeranian Griffins, and his passing extinguished a ruling house that had governed the region since the 12th century. The succession immediately became a flashpoint between Brandenburg and Sweden, eventually folding into the wider catastrophe of the Thirty Years' War already consuming the Empire.
