| Obverse description | Draped bust of Philip II of Spain facing right, with curly hair and ruffled collar, rendered in the Renaissance portrait style typical of Sicilian hammered coinage of the mid-sixteenth century. The effigy occupies the central field and is enclosed within a beaded inner border. The Latin legend PHILIPP VS*D*G (Philippus Dei Gratia) runs along the periphery, partially divided by the portrait, with floral or cross-shaped stops separating the abbreviated words. The overall die work reflects the provincial engraving style of the Palermo mint. |
