Obverse description Draped bust of Philip II of Spain facing right, with curly hair and ruffled collar, rendered in the Renaissance portrait style typical of Sicilian hammered coinage of the mid-sixteenth century. The effigy occupies the central field and is enclosed within a beaded inner border. The Latin legend PHILIPP VS*D*G (Philippus Dei Gratia) runs along the periphery, partially divided by the portrait, with floral or cross-shaped stops separating the abbreviated words. The overall die work reflects the provincial engraving style of the Palermo mint.
