Obverse description The arms of Geneva displayed on a baroque shield occupying the central field: the dexter half bearing a black eagle on gold (the Imperial eagle), and the sinister half a golden key on red (the ecclesiastical symbol of St. Peter). The date is placed above the shield in the upper field. A circular Latin legend surrounds the composition, reading GENEVA CIVITAS, identifying the issuing authority.

Reverse description A plain Latin cross at the center, superimposed upon a quatrefoil formed by four rounded lobes, the whole contained within a beaded inner circle. The Genevan Reformation motto POST TENEBRAS LVX (After darkness, light) appears as the circular legend in the outer field, separated by the mint-master initials B·G, with punctuation marks serving as word dividers throughout.
