| Beschrijving keerzijde | The quartered coat of arms of the Este dynasty, elaborately detailed with multiple heraldic quarters including fleurs-de-lis, diagonal bars, and other dynastic devices, surmounted by a large ducal crown with floral ornaments. The motto PROXIMA SOLI arcs across the upper field flanking the crown, while the date 1763 is engraved in the lower exergue beneath the shield. The entire composition is enclosed within a toothed border. |

Ercole III d'Este came to the Duchy of Modena and Reggio in 1780 — which makes a coin dated 1763 worth a second look. It was struck under his father Francesco III, during a period when the Este finances were in chronic disorder, partly a consequence of Francesco's ruinously expensive building projects and his attempts to maintain a court befitting a duke while governing a territory that barely supported one. The 3 Scudi denomination itself was an awkward large silver issue with limited practical circulation.
