Beschrijving voorzijde The State Coat of Arms of the Soviet Union, featuring a globe with a hammer and sickle at centre, surmounted by a five-pointed star and flanked by symmetrical wheat sheaves bound with a ribbon, occupies the upper field. Below, the Cyrillic legend 'СССР' (USSR) is inscribed across the middle field, with the large numeral '3' and the denomination 'РУБЛЯ' (Roubles) beneath it. The date '1988' appears in the lower exergue. To the lower left, the silver fineness and weight specifications 'Ag 900 / 31,1' are inscribed, while the Leningrad Mint monogram (ЛМД) appears to the lower right. The coin was struck in proof quality with mirror fields and frosted design elements.

Beschrijving keerzijde Two overlapping ancient Russian silver coins (srebreniki) of Prince Vladimir I are depicted in high relief at the centre of the field, their intricate early medieval designs—including a trident tamga and a seated princely figure—rendered in fine detail. The curved legend '1000-ЛЕТИЕ ДРЕВНЕРУССКОЙ МОНЕТНОЙ ЧЕКАНКИ' (1000th Anniversary of Ancient Russian Coin Minting) arcs around the upper and lateral perimeter of the coin. The date '988 г.' (988 AD) appears to the lower right of the central design, while the inscription 'СРЕБРЕНИК ВЛАДИМИРА' (Vladimir's Srebrenik) is placed in the lower field. The composition commemorates the millennium of coinage in Kievan Rus, initiated under the reign of Vladimir the Great.
