Part of Russia's ongoing fairy tale series launched in the early 1990s, this issue appeared during one of the most turbulent monetary periods in post-Soviet history — the rouble had lost the majority of its purchasing power by 1995, and collector silver issues like this one were priced in hard currency specifically because domestic confidence in the rouble was negligible. The Bank of Russia leaned heavily into commemorative programs during this period partly as a foreign exchange mechanism.
Mintage for the fairy tale silver three-rouble pieces was typically kept low, with production handled at the Moscow Mint (MMD).
