| Obverse description | The polished mirror field bears the relief State Coat of Arms of the Russian Federation at centre. A semicircular legend reading РОССИЙСКАЯ ФЕДЕРАЦИЯ (RUSSIAN FEDERATION) arcs above along the rim, flanked on each side by paired rhombuses. Below the arms, the precious metal designation and fineness (Ag 925) appear to the left, while the fine metal content and the Saint Petersburg Mint mark (СПМД) appear to the right. At the base of the field, a three-line inscription reads БАНК РОССИИ (BANK OF RUSSIA), followed by the denomination 3 РУБЛЯ (3 ROUBLES) and the year of issue 2016. |

The Russian Historical Society was re-established in 2012 under Vladimir Putin's direct patronage, reviving a body originally founded in 1866 under Alexander II. The reconstituted organization was explicitly tasked with countering what Russian officials called "falsification of history" — a mandate that tied the society's modern incarnation firmly to state narratives about World War II, the Soviet period, and Russian national identity.
This commemorative was issued the same year the society opened its permanent Moscow headquarters.
