The Russian Geographical Society — founded in 1845 in St. Petersburg, making it one of the oldest continuous geographical societies in the world — received significant renewed state patronage in the 2000s when Vladimir Putin assumed its presidency in 2009. This coin's 2015 issue falls squarely within that period of institutional revival, during which the RGS undertook a series of high-profile expeditions and received substantially increased government funding.
The Bank of Russia issued numerous collector pieces tied to the RGS across multiple years, making individual dates in the series less scarce than their mintages might suggest to a casual buyer.
