Kiev fell to German forces on September 19, 1941, after a catastrophic encirclement that netted roughly 665,000 Soviet prisoners — one of the largest single captures in military history. The city was liberated on November 6, 1943, the eve of the anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution, a timing Stalin ensured was not accidental. This coin was issued fifty years after that liberation, part of a broader Russian commemorative program marking the major turning points of what Soviet and Russian historiography calls the Great Patriotic War.
