The International Polar Year 2007–2008 was a coordinated scientific program involving over 60 nations — the fourth such event in history, following those of 1882–83, 1932–33, and 1957–58. Russia's participation was substantial, with the country operating more Arctic research stations than any other nation and conducting the heavily publicized Arktika 2007 expedition, during which a submersible planted a titanium Russian flag on the seabed directly beneath the North Pole in August of that year.
