This coin commemorates an action from the Second Chechen War that became one of the most discussed engagements in modern Russian military history. In late February and early March 2000, the 6th Company of the 104th Guards Parachute Regiment held a ridge position near Ulus-Kert against an estimated 2,000 fighters attempting to break out of the Argun Gorge. Of the 90 paratroopers deployed, 84 were killed. The Russian government awarded 22 posthumous Hero of Russia medals following the battle — an extraordinarily high number for a single engagement of that scale.
