Moscow University was founded in 1755 on the initiative of Mikhail Lomonosov, who lobbied Empress Elizabeth through her favorite Ivan Shuvalov to establish Russia's first institution of higher learning. The 1999 coin marks the institution's history at a moment when Russia itself was in economic freefall — the August 1998 ruble crisis had collapsed the currency months earlier, making silver commemoratives an ironic luxury in a country where ordinary savings had just been wiped out.
