Vitus Bering, a Dane sailing under Russian imperial commission, led two major Kamchatka expeditions in the 18th century. The second, launched in 1741, ended badly: his ship wrecked on what is now Bering Island, and he died there in December of that year, never knowing he had confirmed the separation of Asia and North America. The tercentenary this coin marks calculates from 1725, the departure of the First Kamchatka Expedition under Peter the Great's personal orders — signed just days before the tsar's own death.
