Pridnestrovie — the unrecognised sliver of territory between Moldova and Ukraine — has issued commemorative coinage since the early 1990s as a deliberate assertion of statehood, and the Siege of Leningrad is a recurring subject in its numismatic output, drawing on the Soviet historical memory that underpins the republic's political identity. The 872-day siege, which ended in January 1944, killed an estimated 800,000 to 1.5 million civilians, primarily through starvation.
KM#562 is among the more recent additions to a long series of Soviet WWII commemoratives from this issuer.
