Arktikugol' — the Soviet state trust that mined coal on Svalbard under the terms of the 1920 Spitsbergen Treaty — issued its own internal scrip for use at the trust's company stores on Barentsburg and Pyramiden. These notes circulated exclusively within those settlements, where Soviet miners had no legitimate access to Norwegian krone yet needed a medium of exchange for goods. Regular Soviet rubles were formally prohibited from leaving USSR territory, and Norwegian authorities would not have permitted their use anyway.
The 1979 series replaced an earlier issue; both are scarce outside former trust employees and specialist collectors of Soviet polar material. NP#AR80 is the three-rouble denomination from that later printing run.
