| Beschrijving voorzijde | The obverse displays the State Emblem of the Russian Federation — a double-headed eagle with outstretched wings, crowned with three imperial crowns, holding an orb and sceptre in its talons, with a shield bearing the mounted figure of Saint George slaying the dragon at centre. The emblem is rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished field. The legend РОССИЙСКАЯ ФЕДЕРАЦИЯ curves along the upper periphery in Cyrillic. Below the eagle, the issuer name БАНК РОССИИ, the denomination 3 РУБЛЯ, and the date 2016 г. are inscribed in three lines. The fineness designation Ag 925 appears to the lower left of the emblem, the weight indicator 31,1 and the Moscow Mint monogram (ММД) to the lower right, flanked by decorative lozenge ornaments. |

The Shoanin Church, built in the tenth century in what is now the Karachay-Cherkess Republic, is one of the oldest surviving Christian structures in Russia — predating the formal Christianization of Kievan Rus. The Bank of Russia has issued dozens of coins in its "Ancient Christian Temples" series, targeting both domestic collectors and the Russian Orthodox cultural sphere.
This particular church was constructed by Alan craftsmen under Byzantine influence, a detail that places it squarely in the contested religious history of the North Caucasus.
