This issue commemorates Ignatiy Sazikov, founder of the eponymous Moscow silversmith firm that gained international recognition at the 1851 Great Exhibition in London — one of the few Russian manufacturers to earn a prize medal there. The firm's reputation rested on naturalistic sculptural silver, a style that influenced high-end Russian decorative metalwork through the remainder of the imperial period.
The Central Bank of Russia's commemorative rouble program has issued dozens of entries honoring Russian craftsmen and applied arts traditions, though Sazikov's firm remains among the less widely known subjects outside specialist circles.
