3 Roubles Sambo

Sambo — the Soviet-developed martial art whose name abbreviates "self-defense without weapons" — was formalized as a sport in 1938 under the auspices of the Red Army, though its roots draw from judo, wrestling traditions across the Soviet republics, and the work of Vasily Oshchepkov, who was later arrested and killed during the Stalinist purges. Russia has issued commemorative silver three-rouble pieces for a remarkably wide range of sporting disciplines, but sambo carries particular nationalist weight given its explicitly Soviet institutional origins and ongoing Russian lobbying to have it recognized as an Olympic sport.
