North Ossetia–Alania is one of the few Russian federal subjects whose name explicitly references a medieval predecessor state — the Alanian kingdom that dominated the central Caucasus until the Mongol invasions of the 13th century effectively destroyed it. The "Alania" suffix was added to the republic's official name in 1994 as part of a broader post-Soviet reassertion of indigenous identity across the North Caucasus. This coin belongs to the Bank of Russia's long-running "Russian Federation" series documenting each of the country's regions, a program that has continued with little interruption since the 1990s.
