Kaliningrad's peculiar geopolitical position — a Russian exclave wedged between Poland and Lithuania, physically detached from Russia since the Soviet dissolution — has made it a recurring subject for the Bank of Russia's regional commemorative program. The territory was German Königsberg until 1946, when Stalin renamed it after Mikhail Kalinin and repopulated it entirely with Soviet citizens following the expulsion of the German population.
