Additional information

The Habomai islets sit at the center of one of the longest-running territorial disputes in postwar history — administered by Japan until Soviet forces seized them in August 1945, days after the atomic bombing of Nagasaki and before Japan's formal surrender. Russia's decision to issue coinage asserting sovereignty over the Kuril Islands chain, of which Habomai is the southernmost cluster, is a deliberate political act. Japan has never recognized the transfer, and no peace treaty between the two countries has ever been signed.
