Issued as part of Russia's first major commemorative silver program following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, this coin was struck ahead of the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States — the first World Cup in which Russia competed as an independent federation, having previously entered tournaments under the Soviet banner. The transition from Soviet to Russian footballing identity was administratively abrupt; FIFA recognized the Russian Football Union as a direct successor only in 1992.
Struck at the Moscow Mint (MMD) with a reported mintage of 40,000 pieces.
