The Eurasian Customs Union, formed by Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan in 2010, was the political project Vladimir Putin described as the most significant geopolitical development on post-Soviet territory since 1991. This commemorative was struck the year Ukraine was under intense pressure from Moscow to abandon EU association talks and join the bloc instead — pressure that culminated in the Euromaidan protests and, ultimately, Russia's annexation of Crimea the following year.
