Part of the long-running Russian Federation regional series, this issue commemorates the Republic of Bashkortostan, one of the most resource-rich constituent republics in the federation, sitting atop substantial oil reserves that made it economically significant during the post-Soviet restructuring of the 1990s. The series as a whole was produced by the Moscow and Saint Petersburg mints in large quantities, limiting numismatic scarcity across virtually all issues.
Bashkortostan declared sovereignty in October 1990, a year before the USSR formally dissolved — one of dozens of autonomy declarations that preceded and accelerated the union's collapse.
