Issued as part of the Bank of Russia's long-running commemorative program honoring national institutions, this coin marks the 300th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences, founded by Peter the Great in 1724 — though the institution didn't hold its first meeting until after his death the following year. The Academy was modeled explicitly on the Paris and Berlin academies, and Peter recruited its founding membership almost entirely from abroad, particularly from the German states.
