Obverse description Full-length standing effigy of King Karl IX in royal regalia, wearing a crown, armour, and ermine-lined mantle, holding an orb in his left hand and a sceptre or sword in his right, with a coat of arms at lower left and an altar or table with objects at lower right. A radiant Hebrew Tetragrammaton (IEHOVAH) appears above the king's head within the inner field. The surrounding Latin legend names the king and commemorates his founding of the city of Gothenburg, interrupted by the Hebrew devotional inscription SOLATIVM MEVM. The legend reads: CAROLVS IX DE G : SVECOR : GOTHOR : VANDAL ETC REX CIVIT : GOTHOB : PRIM : FVND : & COND * IEHOVAH * SOLATIVM * MEVM *.
