Christian VIII's monetary reforms of the early 1840s were an attempt to stabilize Danish currency following the chaos of the Napoleonic Wars and the subsequent state bankruptcy of 1813, which had left the old rigsdaler system badly discredited. The Rigsbank — established in 1818 as the successor to the insolvent Nationalbanken — issued these small billon pieces as part of a transitional coinage that would eventually be superseded by the speciedaler system.
The Type I designation reflects a die modification made within the series' short production window. KM#729 is the scarcer of the two types.
