These copper pieces were struck in Lisbon for circulation in Portugal's Brazilian colonies during a period of acute small-change shortage — a persistent problem throughout the Portuguese Atlantic empire that repeatedly forced emergency minting authorizations. The 3 réis denomination sat at the very bottom of the copper hierarchy, handling the smallest transactions that silver simply couldn't reach.
