These copper pieces were struck in Lisbon for circulation in Portugal's Brazilian colonies during a period of acute small-change shortage — a persistent problem throughout the Portuguese Atlantic empire that repeatedly forced emergency minting authorizations. The 3 réis denomination sat at the very bottom of the copper hierarchy, handling the smallest transactions that silver simply couldn't reach.
The multiple Gomes references reflect distinct die pairings across the run, not separate issues — collectors should expect meaningful variation in strike quality given Lisbon's copper production conditions of the period.
