Obverse description Central field displays the crowned royal cypher 'JV' (for João V) in bold relief within a beaded inner circle, surmounted by a large royal crown. Small quatrefoil or rosette ornaments flank the cypher. The peripheral legend encircles the design, reading 'D.G.PORT.ET.ALG.REX', abbreviated in Latin to denote the king's titles as King of Portugal and the Algarves by the Grace of God. The coin exhibits a milled outer border with a rope or beaded rim typical of Portuguese copper coinage of the early eighteenth century.

Reverse description Central field bears the Roman numeral 'III' in large, bold characters denoting the denomination of three réis, enclosed within a wreath of laurel or olive branches tied at the base. The circumferential legend, separated by star ornaments, reads 'VTILITATI PVBLICÆ' (for the public utility), accompanied by the year of issue. A beaded inner border and a milled outer rim frame the entire design, consistent with the aesthetic conventions of Portuguese Joanine copper coinage.
