Issued to mark the 450th anniversary of Tübingen University, founded in 1477 under a papal bull secured by Count Eberhard im Bart of Württemberg. The Weimar Republic produced a substantial run of commemorative three-mark pieces throughout the late 1920s, and this is among the more historically grounded of them — Tübingen had by 1927 already produced Kepler, Hegel, Schelling, and Hölderlin.
The .500 fine silver content reflects Weimar-era metal economy policies still in force following postwar reparations obligations under Versailles.
