KM Pn101 is one of several pattern strikings produced in 1927 as the Reichsbank and Reich Finance Ministry wrestled with rationalizing the post-stabilization coinage system. The 3 Reichsmark denomination was commercially issued in large numbers throughout the Weimar period, but pattern pieces in this weight and fineness suggest active internal debate over whether to reduce silver content below the circulating .500 standard — a conversation that ultimately went nowhere until the economic pressures of the early 1930s forced the issue.
Pattern survivorship from this mint bureaucracy is erratic; most were destroyed after evaluation.
