Dachau camp scrip was not money in any functional sense — it was a control mechanism. Prisoners received it as nominal "wages" for forced labor, redeemable only at the camp canteen for heavily restricted goods. The SS administration ensured no real purchasing power existed: supply was deliberately inadequate, prices arbitrary, and access revocable at will. The scrip could not leave the camp and had no value outside the wire.

Campbell 3964 covers the 3 Reichsmark denomination within the broader Dachau Lagergeld series used through the war years. Surviving examples reached the market primarily through liberating Allied soldiers in April 1945.
