Obverse description Central field displays the quartered royal arms of Castile and León within a beaded inner circle: the upper-left and lower-right quarters bear the castle of Castile, while the upper-right and lower-left quarters show the rampant lion of León. The shield is surmounted by a crown and flanked by the assayer's initial 'R' on each side. The surrounding legend, partially visible on the irregular flan, reads KAROLVS ET IOHANA, struck in Gothic-influenced Latin characters. The entire design is characteristic of the early Mexican hammered coinage, showing the bold, hand-struck relief typical of the primera época issues.
