| Obverse description | Central field displays the quartered royal arms of Castile and León within a beaded inner circle: the upper-left and lower-right quarters bear the castle of Castile, while the upper-right and lower-left quarters show the rampant lion of León. The shield is surmounted by a crown and flanked by the assayer's initial 'R' on each side. The surrounding legend, partially visible on the irregular flan, reads KAROLVS ET IOHANA, struck in Gothic-influenced Latin characters. The entire design is characteristic of the early Mexican hammered coinage, showing the bold, hand-struck relief typical of the primera época issues. |

| Reverse description | Central field features the Pillars of Hercules flanking a crowned royal monogram composed of the interlaced crowned letters 'K' (Karolus) and 'I' (Iohana), set within a plain oval border. The assayer's initial 'R' appears below the monogram. An outer beaded border frames a partial legend reading HISPANIARVM ET INDIARVM, struck in Latin script around the circumference. The design follows the standard type established at the founding of the Mexico City Mint in 1535, and exhibits the characteristic irregular outline and uneven strike of early New World hammered silver coinage. |
