| Obverse description | Central field bears the crowned Royal Arms of Castile and León, flanked on each side by a Gothic letter M surmounted by a small roundel above and below, serving as the Mexico City mintmark. The arms are rendered in the macuquina (cob) style characteristic of early colonial hammered coinage. The circumferential legend in Gothic lettering reads +KAROLVS ET IOHANA DEI GRA with the V partially visible, identifying the joint monarchs Charles I and Joanna of Castile. The overall striking is irregular in shape, typical of the primitive minting technique employed at the newly established Mexico City mint during its earliest years of operation. |
