背面描述 Two crowned Pillars of Hercules flank a central panel divided by horizontal bands, the upper portion bearing a Gothic letter M above the inscription PLVS VLTR (an abbreviation of the motto PLVS VLTRA), with three horizontal bars below and an assayer's letter R at the base, denoting the assayer responsible for the coinage. The pillars are each surmounted by a royal crown, and a partial encircling Latin legend referring to the Iberian kingdoms appears in the border field. The overall design is characteristic of the macuquina (cob) style, with irregular flan and bold if sometimes off-center striking.

附加信息

Among the earliest coins struck in the Western Hemisphere, this issue dates to the first years of the Mexico City mint, established by royal decree in 1535. Production was irregular and plagued by labor disputes, shortages of refined silver, and the logistical nightmare of operating a European-style monetary institution in a newly conquered city still being physically rebuilt from the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan.

Carlos I never set foot in New Spain. The coins bearing his name circulated in an economy that was simultaneously dismantling indigenous exchange systems based on cacao and copper axe-money and replacing them with milled silver — a transition that took decades and was never fully complete during his reign.
