| Reverse description | The reverse displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a shield bearing the quinas (the five escutcheons of Portugal) surmounted by a royal crown — struck in low relief at the center of the flan. The denomination mark and mint letter appear flanking the shield: the letter L (for Lisboa, the Lisbon Mint) to the left and the numeral 3 to the right (or reversed in the L-3 arrangement depending on the variety). The fields are plain and the flan edges are irregular, consistent with hammered production. The overall design is bold and heraldic, reflecting the standard Portuguese copper coinage aesthetic of the reign of Sebastião I. |
