Reverse description Quarter-circle segment retaining a significant portion of the Spanish colonial reverse design, featuring a partial crowned shield of Castile and León with a castle tower visible in one quartering. A six-petalled rosette or floral countermark is applied in the center of the field, serving as the official Curaçao authorization mark. Remnants of the Latin legend are visible along the curved periphery, and the dentilated edge of the host coin is preserved. The partial pillars-and-waves device of the Spanish colonial design is discernible in the lower field.

Additional information

Between 1799 and 1803, Curaçao — then under the Batavian Republic following France's reorganization of the Dutch state — faced a chronic shortage of fractional silver. Rather than wait for shipments from Europe, colonial authorities solved the problem by counterstamping Spanish colonial reales already circulating on the island. The "C" punch, applied over existing host coins, officially retariffed them at 3 Reaal or 18 Stuiver for local transactions.

Host coins vary considerably, and identifying the original issue beneath the punch is half the work with this type.
