Obverse description Hammered copper flan bearing a two-line Arabic legend in the field, reading 'Sultan Mehmed bin Ibrahim', executed in a bold, somewhat crude calligraphic style characteristic of Ottoman provincial coinage. The inscription is framed above and below by foliate or rope-like ornamental borders, with additional decorative pellet motifs flanking the text. The overall design is aniconic and purely epigraphic, as is customary for Islamic coinage of this period. The surface shows the irregular contours and texture typical of hand-struck hammered pieces produced at the Tunis mint in the mid-to-late 17th century.
