Struck during the Kipper- und Wipperzeit — the catastrophic currency debasement crisis that swept the Holy Roman Empire between roughly 1619 and 1623 — this small copper issue emerged from a monetary environment of deliberate fraud at the state level. Princes and minting authorities across the Empire raced to produce debased coinage, spend it quickly across neighboring borders, and collect sound money in return before the inevitable collapse. Mecklenburg-Schwerin was no bystander to this practice.
